Sardar Udham - A Masterpiece That People Won't Understand

When I first watched Sardar Udham my first reaction was no reaction. I was left speechless. I never thought that this movie would affect me in this way. It's been more than a week but until now I have not been able to escape from the essence of this movie. I think this film is a cinematic masterpiece and I am very sure that most of the people will find it boring as it doesn't not contain thrill and entertainment which matches the taste of a typical bollywood biopic movie and I am totally ok with it as cinema is an art and art is subjective. But there are also many people like me who are deeply affected by this film. So let's deep dive and see why this movie is a masterpiece ahead of its time.

Sardar Udham - A Masterpiece That People Won't Understand

1. Character study of Udham Singh

When we watch most of the bollywood biopics we can see the main character's story is commercialized and is not deeply layered but after watching the first scene of Udham Singh we can realise how deeply the character of Udham Singh is written. This film is a deep Psychological analysis of Sardar Udham and unlike other Bollywood movies, the film's hero will not sing any song or scream out of timing just to produce entertainment and that's why this movie can be seen as boring by some people but at the core it is the biggest strength of this movie.

2. Non Linear Storytelling

Director Shoojit Sircar adapts a way of non linear storytelling in the movie unlike other movies which makes the movie unique.

In the first 20 minutes of the movie Udham Assassinated O'Dwyer which most of the directors would disagree with and would show this scene as climax at end by creating a lot of hype but Kudos to Shoojit for his way of storytelling. In all, this movie's writing is like a painting. The closer you look, the more beautiful it looks.

3. Production Designs

As we all know it's a periodic movie so it's production design should be so realistic that the viewer connects with the movie and this movie is successful in pulling this off. Pre-independence Punjab and 1920's London is recreated so beautifully that we feel a connection with it. In the movie there is a scene where a fax machine is used which has become extinct today but makers collected such old Artifacts and machines that the movie successfully transports us to 1920's world.

4. Cinematography and Editing

Cinematography is a thing which can make a movie from just good to epic and this movie is a classic example of it. The visual shots in this movie are insane and how lighting and different camera angles are used to depict Sardar udham is insane.

Movie's editing is also a task that was done perfectly and with so many camera angles in work it's very difficult to edit but makers have done it very perfectly and successfully.

5. Acting(Vicky Kaushal)

Vicky just nailed the role of Sardar Udham and after watching the movie you can easily see how maturely he enacted the role. The main strength of his acting is that from the very first scene we just start to see Sardar Udham not Vicky. Vicky is a type of actor who doesn't deep dive into any type of method acting or any other's style but just sincerely completes his work with perfection.

So with these points I would like to stop here only and in last I would say masterpieces are not masterpieces for everyone as they hit different people in different way but this movie is a torchbearer for our cinema that whenever this type of biopic is to be made what's the way to make it and for gaining knowledge about our freedom fighter we should definitely give a watch to this movie.
